Kinja'd!!!

This last week 1/2 was rubbish, quite honestly. Staying out of boost 90% of the time recorded. I filled up so I could venture out to see Deadpool yesterday. The week 1/2 average was....19.6 MPG -_-

What the hell happened this time? I don't know. It's still cold and running winter gas, but with averages of 23.4 and 23.8 MPG the last two times...

Could be worse, my Jeep gets 12 and the way I drive my M3, that gets 9.

But are you babying it, or “driving” it. Because that 19.6 was me babying it like I'd been the last two tries.

Woohoo! Finally a 4-cylinder car that gets worst MPGs than the pickup.

You should be so proud. Turbo cars are so finicky when you try to get good MPGs.

I’m averaging around 15.8-16MPG in my Ram... and mostly local driving. If I drive it on the highway, I get around 21-24, with a 5.7L V8

Might be a couple things at play here:

First, temperature. I notice in my FiST, this has an incredible effect. Going from 15F to 35F results in a multiple MPG swing, from around 22 to 26 maybe? in mostly city driving.

Second, it may not always be best to stay out of boost. These turbo’d engines are insanely complex, and the computers are silly. I know on my MINI engine, it really was more efficient to be running over 4k on the highway than below 3k, because the power specific fuel consumption was lower above 4k then 3k.

FWIW, I’m currently averaging 22MPG in the FiST over the last 5 days, which includes a couple very cold days (Lafayette, IN) and about an hour of play time in the snow.

See, that’s the thing I don’t understand. Logically, I thought stay out of boost because that means more air which means more fuel; and the colder and denser air certainly couldn’t help either. I can’t read the computer’s mind, but if my logic is wrong then I give up. The thing is turning at least 3k at 80mph on the highway at least in 6th gear. When I’m up to speed cruising around town at 40mph, I’m in 6th gear at 1500rpm.

Being too low in RPM is not a good thing either. On every one of the car I drive regularly (all are diesel and turbo’ed) I get better mileage when I’m sticking around 2000/2500 RPM. If you’re lower, you’re not getting any benefit from having a turbo in the car, and higher, well, too much boost as you say. You want your turbo to be loaded to have any benefit from it.

Holy shit. How is your mileage that bad? I don’t even baby mine anymore and almost always average high 27's to mid 28's.

Kinja'd!!! Levitas > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
02/16/2016 at 08:26

Kinja'd!!!0

Correct, more boost means more air and thus more fuel. But, similar to what BATC42 said, sometimes its better to have some boost. There are some pretty nice increases in engine efficiency when boost just sets in (or a higher compression ratio) which greatly offset whatever extra fuel was consumed. I would guess if you put your 2-3-4 shift points a tad higher once the weather warms up to 35-40, you’ll see big improvements in mileage.

There was a study one of the magazines did a while ago that notice it was more fuel efficient to stab the throttle to build your speed and then cruise at that speed than it was to gradually build to that speed because engines are more efficient at higher RPMs in terms of getting energy out of a given fuel load.

For these turbo engines, they are designed to run in boost. So your 2500 rpm efficiency is a lot lower since it wants more like 3500 rpm to get some forced air into the system. I’ll be the ecoboost runs rich at low rpms so you’re not very efficient in terms of energy recovered from fuel.

So you’re saying I should actually boost more to be more efficient. I’ll give it a try.

With my fiesta, it is common for 5th gear to be more efficient than 6th until I pass about 50mph or so.

I’ll also try avoiding 6th gear as well. I tend to use it when the shift light tells me to, and that’s at 40mph.

10% boost time is high...

I’m probably one of the only people out there that regularly drives his FoST for fuel economy, so here are some things I know:

It hates the cold like no other car I’ve ever owned. Cold weather makes it run super rich. Cold is like 50 degrees.

It runs super rich when the engine itself is cold. It also will not warm up until you’ve done a good 6-8 miles of highway driving.

Use the shift lights, Luke! Shift right before the shift light would come on for best fuel efficiency.

This car has INSANE torque at crazy low RPMs. It’s almost like driving a diesel. 1500rpm is your target, 2000-2200rpm is your ceiling, except in highway driving in 6th gear. If you stay in this range, you’ll never go into boost.

Coast in gear with your foot off the gas in a higher gear. It keeps the motor spinning without using any gas. Only downshift if it is under 1500rpm.

Surprisingly, the A/C compressor in this car seems to sap an almost indiscernible amount of power and doesn’t seem to notably affect gas mileage. In other cars, I’d see at least 1-2mpg loss, but this car is well under 1. Still, if you want to get the most out of it, turn off the windshield defroster/vents and turn off A/C.

Tires might also be a problem, but there’s only so far I’d bother to go for fuel economy. I didn’t buy this car to sip gas, I bought it to have fun driving on curvy roads and oversteering in corners. Since it’s my DD, it also serves as transportation, and when I’m not playing with it, I want to exploit the “eco” part of the engine’s marketing.

1. No doubt about that. The temp gauge doesn’t even move below 30 degrees until at least 4-5 minutes into my commute...And the oil temp gauge doesn’t even move by the time I get to class; that’s 10 minutes and maybe 4 miles, but that makes sense. My commutes are so short, the only time the oil temp goes up is when my drive exceeds 10 miles.

2. I’ve been using the shift lights religiously for the last 4 weeks. God damn is it boring, but I’m trying as hard as I can. Although no I will try to anticipate when the light comes on and shift before it.

3. I must be driving wrong because I never get any sense of torque from 1500-2500rpm. Unless I’m just really light on the go-fast pedal, because I assumed all that down low torque was from boost; but if I don’t boost at all, I don’t get any torque. It’s confusing to me a bit.

4. The coasting, that I can do no problem.

5. I think the other thing that bothers me is the damn 12.4 gallon tank. It’s miserably small.

The previous poster speaks the truth. I generally get close to 30 mpg in the summer and 26-27 mpg in the winter with my ST. Temperature seems to be the biggest factor. I run on 87 most of the time, especially in the winter. Even on 87 gas half throttle in 1st/2nd gear means wheel spin.

A week or so ago you posted about performing a hand calc on your mpg. Be weary of that; depending on the gas station the tank will fill up to around 1 gallon short. I track with an app and sometimes see one tank listed as 24 mpg and the next at 35 mpg. It balances out over time, over the last 5 months I’ve got a calculated average of 29.001 mpg over 5,000 miles.

My commute is 45 mph back roads with a few stops and I rarely have the opportunity to accelerate hard due to traffic. I notice that my fuel economy actually goes down a bit at highways speeds (70-80 mph). Play the game, shoot for 5 green leaves in the “mini-game” built into the car.
